Scanning electron micrograph of a cervical cancer cell
Cancer cells use filopodia, actin-rich 'antenna', to probe their environment during migration. The cell in this image is a HeLa cell, part of a cultured cell line that was derived from a biopsy of a cervical tumour from Henrietta Lacks who died of cervical cancer in October 1951 aged 31. Although common practice at the time, Lacks' cells were taken without her knowledge or consent.
