Firm to sell Norwegian site and shift focus towards Asia

German chemicals giant BASF is cutting 260 jobs over the next 18 months in its nutrition and health division. The firm plans to sell its plant in Brattvåg, Norway, that produces nutritional products including omega-3 fatty acids from fish oils.

The Brattvåg site produces low-concentration omega-3, and BASF says that demand is for more highly concentrated forms, which it produces elsewhere. At the same time, the company is shifting some the focus of its flavour and fragrance segment towards Asia. It is building a citral plant with Malaysian partner Petronas, the first parts of which are due to come onstream in 2016.
