Many consumers add bleach to cleaning products as a disinfectant and to assist cleaning. They should be aware that most surfactants are not stable to bleach. Such mixtures should be used immediately. Otherwise the bleach gradually destroys the surfactant and the surfactant consumes the bleach. Cleaning products that contain chlorine bleach are carefully formulated to be shelf stable.
